Steps to Set Up BYOC

  1. Confirm Carrier Compatibility
Ensure your existing carrier supports SIP trunking and allows connections to external cloud platforms.
Verify you have the required credentials: SIP trunk username, password, SIP server IP or domain, and assigned DID ranges.

  2. Obtain Required Documentation
Carrier SIP trunk configuration guide (for firewall, codecs, and protocols).
Cloud platform BYOC integration guide (from the platform provider).

  3. Network & Security Preparation
Configure firewall rules to allow SIP signaling and RTP media streams between your carrier and the cloud platform.
Ensure Quality of Service (QoS) for voice traffic on your network to avoid call quality issues.
Check NAT traversal and public IP addressing if applicable.

  4. Configure the Cloud Platform
Log into your cloud communication platform.
Navigate to the BYOC or SIP Trunking settings.
Add a new trunk, using the carrier’s SIP details (SIP URI, authentication credentials, codecs).
Configure inbound DID mapping and outbound dial plans (e.g., +E.164 format).

  5. Validate Number Portability (Optional)
If you plan to use existing numbers from your carrier, verify number portability or routing.
For new numbers, ensure they are correctly assigned in the platform.

  6. Testing
Place inbound and outbound test calls to verify:
    Caller ID presentation
    Audio quality (both directions)
Failover routing (if using multiple carriers)
Validate international, local, and toll-free numbers as needed.

  7. Go Live
After successful testing, route live traffic through the BYOC configuration.
Monitor call quality and CDRs (Call Detail Records) during the initial usage period.

  8. Ongoing Monitoring & Maintenance
Regularly review CDRs for cost tracking and call routing accuracy.
Update SIP credentials or trunk configuration when carrier changes occur.
Ensure backup routing or failover carriers are configured for business continuity.
